The lenses are also curved for a better effect. Dolby 3D is your best bet for a headache free 3D viewing experience, but as with any new digital theater technology, it is hard to find. The red lens filters out red light and the cyan lens filters out the cyan colors, so that each eye effectively sees a different image. This technology is still worth mentioning as you will still see it used for TV movies or books, but the theater industry is moving toward digital movies and polarization.
In the real world, each of your eyes see a slightly different image due to the fact that they are a couple of inches apart. If you hold one of your fingers right in front of your nose you will notice that you can see everything behind your finger. Whatever your finger is blocking from the left eye can be seen by the right eye.
Your brain is capable of determining distance based on the differences between what the left and right eyes see. Theaters use the same principle to produce a 3D effect. The 3D glasses polarized, stereoscopic, or LCD shutter are all designed to ensure that the left and right eyes see different things. Some 3D technologies require a special projector, a special screen or both. Polarized 3D glasses work in the same way that polarized sunglasses block sunlight. Polarized sunglasses block any light that is horizontally polarized - typically light reflected off of a flat surface on the ground.
Polarized 3D glasses have one lens that blocks horizontally polarized light and one lens that blocks vertically polarized light. So, can you use 3D glasses from the movie theater at home? Movie theaters typically use RealD 3D glasses, which are passive 3D glasses and these will absolutely work with your 3D system at home, providing it also supports passive 3D technology. While active 3D technology is the most common type, movie theater glasses will work in your home if you have a passive system.

This is definitely true of 3D technology, and particularly 3D projectors. Movie theaters use passive technology, which is much more expensive. However, this makes the glasses cheaper, which is a more suitable business model for movie theaters. Typically they use RealD 3D glasses source , which are marketed as cinema level technology. These are polarized 3D glasses. Watch this one minute video to know about the difference between active and passive 3D.
The real deciding factor is the type of TV or monitor you own. If you want to use movie theater 3D glasses at home, then make sure your 3D TV or projector supports passive 3D technology. RealD cinemas also use the passive circular polarizing technique to achieve 3D which allows viewers a clear image even when turning or tilting their heads. Imax Digital 3D: This is a similar format that also uses polarizing glasses.
Imax Digital 3D is an evolutionary improvement of analog Imax 3D theaters that have been around since Its long history is evident even in the much newer Imax Digital 3D theaters since they still utilize the linear polarizing technology of its analog predecessors. Unlike RealD, Imax 3D movies are less tolerant of head movements. Viewers have to avoid tilting their heads, though some turning—probably unavoidable due to the massive Imax screen format—is possible.

Thanks so much, Wonderopolis! Gregory , Mandy, Blake, Sarah Jun 19, That was a cool wonder. I never knew how you could make 3- D movies and how your eyes and brain work to create the image. It's interesting how the movie makers have figured out a way to copy how our eyes work to create a 3D image. I learned that 3D stands for three dimensional and that 3D has width, length and depth.
