Its not that I am jealous. Not at all. I sincerely respect what the Crossfit brand has done and I am thankful for some of the fundamental changes Crossfit brought to the industry at large. The founder of Crossfit, Greg Glassman, has a very free market approach and allows affiliate owners to have a large amount of autonomy. The average Crossfit box was many times less expensive to start up and operate when compared to traditional gyms. In my opinion this is one of the main reasons Crossfit grew so quickly.
The average Crossfit dues fee is also many times larger than the average big box gym membership. It was an easier to start and faster to profit gym business model when compared to traditional gyms. Crossfit also did something the fitness industry had failed at doing for decades. It got average people to do the best and most effective resistance training exercises. When I started running big box gyms two decades ago it was rare to see more than 2 squat racks in an entire 30 thousand square foot gym, and they had dust on them!
I literally almost NEVER saw anyone do a proper barbell squat and it was even more rare to see someone deadlift. To make matters worse female members avoided ANY kind of heavy resistance training like the plague. I used to spend a majority of my time educating members on the body sculpting, metabolism boosting and overall health benefits of heavy barbell work. That being said, Crossfit also promoted some stupid and long term damaging trends to the industry.
I remember the first time I watched a Crossfit class. It was in and I was very into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Some of my training partners started talking about this new workout class they were taking. Being an experienced personal trainer, I was extremely curious.
Having as much experience as I had at the time as a trainer, I immediately knew this new workout would be popular but also have a high risk of injury and a high risk of burnout. People love hard ass kicking workouts.
The fitness industry knows this. The harder the workout the more people perceive the workout as being effective. Extremely hard workouts also get people to talk about their workouts. In fact, personal trainers often brag about how hard they can train clients and how sore they can make them.
Harder definitely is NOT better, and in many cases is much worse. I learned this lesson in the first few years of my personal training career.
When I first started I trained people hard with the intent of helping them progress faster. What happened instead was slower progress and even some minor injuries. It was VERY difficult to gauge appropriate intensity for my average year old deconditioned client. Sometimes just doing a few sets of body weight squats was too much.
As I became a better trainer I learned how to judiciously apply intensity and my clients progressed much smoother and faster.
Crossfit is absolutely terrible in this regard. Crossfit workouts are based on intensity. And the more you decrease your time per set, the simpler the exercise should get.
What a surprise. As you can imagine, these are just a few examples. The tip of the iceberg. And since CrossFit is basically built on this pile of crap, it is by extension not worth your time. These idiots claim that such a move comes from gymnastics and since gymnasts are ripped, then by the correlation, everyone should be doing the same thing to get ripped. There are only specific reasons to kip, and that is during a bar routine so you can perform extremely high level tricks.
Fundamentally, you have to understand what a kipping movement actually does — it helps you use momentum so you have to do less work while focusing on doing more complicated movements. As an example, kipping in the pull-up completely eliminates the eccentric portion of the exercise, which research has shown to be even more beneficial for strength and muscle gains than the concentric the act of pulling yourself up.
Why would you purposefully get rid of the best fucking part?! This is why no gymnast in the world does exercises that are easy. If you want more info on how these athletes really train, hit up my good friend and fellow coach Steve on Twitter. Which you are most likely not. Also, try not to get brain damage. As you can imagine, there are more than five reasons why CrossFit training is not only a waste of time, but an embarrassment to every intelligent, hard-working individual that wants to better themselves.
Think about that for a second. Now if you want to coach it adequately, and spot corrections on an athlete or client, it takes even longer. Yet some jerk off with a bit of cash can come out of weekend seminar and can now magically teach you how to perform complex movements? I think not. The only reason it can even be mildly entertaining to watch is because the technique standards are so bad, it defies belief.
Also, there are quite a few fails that will make you laugh your ass off. The amount of lawsuits that CrossFit has against it is staggering. Google that shit. You want sexy abs, a powerful body and the ability to move, jump and live life?
It can be done in a safer and cheaper manner. Click Here to download mp3 Click Here to tweet about this Episode In today's episode, I flip the entire concept of motivation on its head. See, most people think that…. Crossfit workout is an extremely popular way to train and there are some pros as well. Many fitness trainers know that the best way to get most out of their training is to give people a target or a specific goal.
If you give a metric to compare themselves against others, peers or competitors, it would drive them to reach those goals. Secondly crossfit training is a metabolic conditioning program rather than steady state cardio where anaerobic exercises are structured one after the other which is a more exciting way to train.
I have also watched guys like Coach Kenn from the Carolina Panthers run a room as if he was conducting an orchestra with athletes performing exercises with perfect movement. A guy takes his C. Heck a guy or gal goes online tonight and takes some certification, and then gets a job at L. Fitness tomorrow. Are you kidding me? Clients and athletes deserve better. Instead of everyone hating on each other, we need to find common ground where we can judge all coaches.
If they possess these qualities, you have something to work with. If not, they need to keep working until they have them. I want this industry cleaned up. I want people to get the help that they deserve. This is an entire industry problem. CrossFit has done a lot for the strength world.
It has introduced more people to the barbell than anything before. CrossFit has been the catalyst for millions of people to get off the couch and into shape.
