Distilled water can be good for people, but they can have too much of a good thing. It is possible to overhydrate , or have too much water in your body. Although human bodies are mostly water, it is important to maintain the correct balance of water and other substances.
When athletes sweat, they lose both water and salt SF Fig. If an athlete drinks too much distilled or tap water after sweating heavily, they may throw off the balance of water and salts in their body. This affects the ability of their bodies to function properly. In rare cases, if an athlete has consumed too much distilled or tap water, the water and salt imbalance is too great and the athlete can die.
This is the reason why serious athletes drink sports drinks that have a balance of water, salts, and sugars to keep them properly hydrated SF Fig.
Most people can get the proper balance of water and salts through a normal diet and do not need to drink sports drinks. Substances A and C show sharp melting points and so are pure. Pure or impure? Everyday mixtures Many useful products at home are made from mixtures. Distinguishing between pure substances and mixtures Scientists need to know that substances made in the laboratory are pure. One way to test this is to find the melting point of a substance: pure substances have sharp melting points mixtures melt over a range of temperatures The melting point range of a substance is the temperature range from which the first crystal starts to melt, to the temperature at which the last crystal finishes melting.
An impure substance is a type of mixture, so melting points can be used to find out if a substance is pure or impure. August ; 3 : — Melting experiments were performed encompassing both pure and impure substances. The pure substances included n-octadecane paraffin and n-eicosane paraffin, while the impure substances were mixtures synthesized from the pure paraffins.
The experiments were carried out in a closed vertical tube whose wall was subjected to a step-change increase in temperature to initiate the melting. This correlation enables melting rates for impure substances to be determined from melting rates for pure substances. Sign In or Create an Account. Sign In. Advanced Search.
