What do you use gesso for




















If you are priming your canvas indoors with relatively low humidity chances are the gesso will dry anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. If there is high humidity in your work environment it can take even longer. Rule of thumb is to wait at least 20 minutes and check for lift — if there is lift then give it more time. Gesso makes the surface less absorbent.

This means that if you were to paint an untreated or unprimed canvas the paint will soak through and create an undesirable result. Gesso priming takes a little time and patience. If done well, it gives you a lovely surface for your artwork. Here is how to apply it to canvas, wood, paper, board, etc. Step 1 : Protect your tabletop or easel as it does not come off easily. Ensure your surface is clean and free from dirt or oils. A quick wipe with a dry brush or a little rubbing alcohol is good.

Step 2 : Dip brush into the gesso. Most gesso is ready to use straight from the container after shaking or stirring. Step 3 : Apply the gesso in a thin, even coat to the surface, working all in one direction horizontal or vertical. Step 4 : Allow the first coat to dry 1 hour. Be patient. Step 5 : Lightly sand the dried gesso with fine sandpaper. This smooths any brush ridges and allows for a slight tooth for good adhesion of paints.

If you lie the ridges, leave them. Step 6 : Apply a second layer of gesso, working the brush in the opposite direction from the first layer horizontal or vertical. As a decorative painter, I would try to mix my own concoction of drywall mud or plaster of Paris and flat latex paint for interior use.

Not sure of the ratio, but play with the consistency…it needs to be fairly stiff. Drywall mud would need to have at least half and half with latex paint or it would wash off. Drywall mud must be sealed to become permanent. There are stucco mixes that would do the trick also and might be more affordable and less time consuming in the long run. I advise test before you go to the fireplace to make sure it is permanent and looks the way you like.

However, the store staff should know the difference. Gesso is versatile. Apart from using it to prime the pages , it can serve many other purposes. You can do this before you even start painting. In any case, you can use gesso to cover stuff. When I feel my colors are too bold or bright, I just use a thin layer of gesso and tone the whole thing down. The effect of this technique is amazing.

The hazy look you get is one of my favorites. At any shop with art supplies, hobby shops, arts and crafts stores, etc. You can ask at the store which kind is the most popular with buyers and buy that one. If you mix gesso with a bit of water, you thin it down and you can get a hazy look on your page. The layer of gesso will be very thin so you can use this technique to desaturate a colorful page.

In most cases, all you need to do is apply gesso with a big, wet gesso brush. Of course you can. If you want to prime your page in any color, just add some paint to the gesso. Experiment with the shades and the amount of paint, and tint it any way you like. This certainly depends on the brand and the amount of gesso you apply on the page. First of all, the colors became desaturated and flowed easily over the page because the gesso made the surface smooth I have gesso that leaves a smooth, shiny surface. I prefer watercolor paper for painting with watercolors. But bear in mind that I was using cheap, student-grade gesso. But you can also have fun with using gesso before watercolors.

This is an example when I tried it, and I can use this background for anything. It has a lot of texture and I like that. This technique would be great for abstract watercolor painting.
